emonDC is a project aiming to develop DC current and voltage measuring tools compatible with openenergymonitor.org project.

This board, emonDCduo, is an open-source dual-channel monitor with WiFi connectivity, aimed at solar/battery systems.

Both hardware and software design files and code are publicly accessible, link below.

  • Two-channel 'high-side' DC current and voltage sensing, up to 64.4V or 75V, suitable for a wide range of low-voltage generator/battery systems.
  • Delivered with a range of shunts for manual soldering, according to expected system Amperage. Continuous rating recommended 50Amps, 120Amps peak.
  • Waterproof, clear-top plastic case.
  • WiFi Connectivity (ESP8266).
  • OLED display showing voltage, current, state of charge and other info.
  • RTC and coin-cell holder to keep time (including NTC time from internet).
  • microSD card slot for on-board logging of data.
  • Accurate 12-bit ADC.
  • Over-voltage and reverse voltage protected (fuses)
  • Current draw is approx 60mA @ 12V


It can function as independent unit self-powered using an onboard buck regulator module, connected to either channel, generator or battery. Data can be stored locally to a MicroSD card, keeping time with on-board RTC and coin-cell.

Voltage divisions for reference voltages easily modified by soldering through-hole components for maximum resolution for given system.

Physical UART connection possible for measurement data, debugging, and firmware upload.

Unit Includes:

  • emonDCduo board mostly assembled.
  • RTC, microSD card slot, and WiFi module.
  • Buck DC-DC Converter
  • Shunts, a small selection to choose from.
  • Ring terminals and bolts for 6mm cable.


Isolate incoming current carriers before working on their connections to this device.

The serial-port is NOT isolated.

Be aware of high currents even in extra-low voltage systems.

Isolation. emonDCduo is NOT galvanically isolated. The protection of users and connected devices from floating ground voltages in certain applications is very important. The general approach at present is to make use of suitable physical isolation (plastic case) and warning labels. Don't connect a device to the serial port if it is also connected to ground (through a power-supply, for example).

Short circuit protection exists at different levels of the hardware design to avoid inadvertent damage to the unit, by assembly faults on part of the manufacturer (PCB and assembly) or assembler, or the user upon installation. This has been achieved by adding fuses, careful design of the PCB tracks and adding impedance 
in certain locations.

Transient and reverse voltage protection. The TVS diodes specified have been tested with a lighter ignition sparker only. Board was functioning after repeated testing. The combination of fuse and diode creates the over-voltage protection.

Lightning Protection. Gas Discharge Tubes can be used to protect the device from lightning.

The unit is defined as a Protected Extra-Low Voltage (PELV) device.
